Why is the sunset red?

If you look at the sunset, you will find that it is usually red, with the colours spreading across the sky. Sometimes on a hot day you may notice that the sun is red too. Do you know why the sun or the sunset is red?

Of course the sun has not suddenly changed colour. It only has that colour during a certain time of the day. In fact, people looking at the sun thousands kilometers to the west may not find it red at all! The colours of the sun are produced by the distance that the sunlight has to travel throught the atmosphere. The lower the sun is in the sky, the longer the distance the light has to travel throught.

You see sunlight is a mixture of light of all colours. This mixture of light usully appears as white to our eyes. However, the atmosphere contains molecules of air, dust, water vapor and other impurities. As the light passes throught them, different colours are scattered by these particles. It happens that the atmospherescatters violet, blue, and green light more than it scatters the red or the yellow lights. When the sun is low in the sky, as during sunset, most of the violet, blue and green lights are scattered. This leaves only  red and yellow lights which spread across the sky at sunset. That is why we have red sunset.

Nick Name

Semua orang pasti punya nama panggilan alias nick name. Sebagian orang dipanggil mengunakan nama belakang atau nama depan mereka. I think, nama panggilan itu penting banget biar orang nggak bingung. Nick name nggak musti nyokap bokap yang nyiptain, kadang temen-temen yang super kreatif menciptakan sebuah nick name yang lebih sering dipakai daripada nama asli. Seperti temen aku, Adinda, nama Adinda berarti adik, nah waktu dikelas dulu nama panggilannya sama temenku diganti jadi adek. Aku pengen nama panggilan baru sebenarnya, dari kecil aku dipanngil RACHMA, waktu di SMP temenku ada yang panggil aku RANA. Nah jadilah itu nama aku kenalin sama temen-temen komunitas GITALOVERS, dll. Saat SMA nanti, aku pengen dipanggil dengan RARA. Nick name ini diambil waktu tentor les sedang mengabsen, waktu giliranku aku ditanya nama panggilan, beliau menyarankan nama ini buat dijadikan nick name. Setelah itu, aku berpikir, "Boleh juga nih!" :) Akhirnya nama itu aku pake di nama punggung seragam basket aku waktu SMA.
Dan ketika kalian punya karya, entah itu gambar cerpen atau apa, biasanya kita bakal punya nama pena (read: bukan nama sebenarnya). Kalau aku? Nama penaku itu ra, kenapa ra? mungkin bisa diceritakan di lain post kali yak?! :) 
Tapi menurutku, kalau sekolahku tetep di kota yang sama, orang nggak akan kenal kita dengan nama panggilan kita. Padahal cuma ganti nama panggilan, bisa-bisa aku dianggap ganti kepribadian juga, duh :'o
yah terserah merekalah, mengganti nama panggilan itu nggak merugikan kok, asal tetep pada norma-norma yang berlaku ya...bagi yang suka gonta ganti nama temen nggak boleh seenaknya juga, kalau dia nggak suka jangan diterusin, oke :D ?

     d. Wiriaatmaja : Ayah dari Maria dan Tuti, seorang yang memegang teguh agama,baik hati dan penyayang

     e. Partadiharja : Adik Ipar Wiriaatmaja, seseorang yang baik hati, teguh pendirian dan peduli antar sesama.

8. Sinopsis:

Tuti adalah putri sulung Raden Wiriatmadja.Dia dikenal sebagai seorang gadis yang pendiam teguh dan aktif dalam berbagai kegiatan organisasi wanita.Watak Tuti yang selalu serius dan cenderung pendiam sangat berbeda dengan adiknya Maria.Ia seorang gadis yang lincah dan periang.

Suatu hari, keduanya pergi ke pasar ikan.Ketika sedang asyik melihat-lihat akuarium, mereka bertemu dengan seorang pemuda.Pertemuan itu berlanjut dengan perkenalan.Pemuda itu bernama Yusuf, seorang Mahasiswa Sekolah Tinggi Kedokteran di Jakarta.Ayahnya adalah Demang Munaf, tinggap di Martapura, Sumatra Selatan.

Perkenalan yang tiba-tiba itu menjadi semakin akrab dengan diantarnya Tuti dan Maria pulang.Bagi yusuf, perteman itu ternyata berkesan cukup mendalam.Ia selal teringat kepada kedua gadis itu, dan terutama Maria.Kepada gadis lincah inilah perhatian Yusuf lebih banyak tertumpah.Menurutnya wajah Maria yang cerah dan berseri-seri serta bibirnya yang selalu tersenyum itu, memancarkan semangat hidup yang dinamis.

Esok harinya, ketika Yusuf pergi ke sekolah, tanpa disangka-sangka ia bertemu lagi dengan Tuti dan Maria di depan Hotel Des Indes. Yusuf pun kemudian dengan senang hati menemani keduanya berjalan-jalan.Cukup hangat mereka bercakap-cakap mengenai berbagai hal.

Sejak itu, pertemuan antara Yusuf dan Maria berlangsung lebih kerap.Sementara itu Tuti dan ayahnya melihat hubungan kedua remaja itu tampak sudah bukan lagi hubungan persahabatan biasa.

Tuti sendiri terus disibuki oleh berbagai kegiatannya.Dalam kongres Putri Sedar yang berlangsung di Jakarta, ia sempat berpidato yang isinya membicarakan emansipasi wanita.Suatu petunjuk yang memperlihatkan cita-cita Tuti untuk memajukan kaumnya.

Pada masa liburan, Yusuf pulang ke rumah orang tuanya di Martapura. Sesungguhnya ia bermaksud menghabiskan masa liburannya bersama keindahan tanah leluhurnya, namun ternyata ia tak dapat menghilangkan rasa rindunya kepada Maria. Dalam keadaan demikian, datang pula kartu pos dari Maria yang justru membuatnya makin diserbu rindu. Berikutnya, surat Maria datang lagi. Kali ini mengabarkan perihal perjalannya bersama Rukamah, saudara sepupunya yang tinggal di Bandung. Setelah membaca surat itu, Yusuf memutuskan untuk kembali ke Jakarta, kemudian menyusul sang kekasih ke Bandung. Setelah mendapat restu ibunya, pemuda itu pun segera meninggalkan Martapura.

Kedatangan Yusuf tentu saja disambut hangat oleh Maria dan Tuti.Kedua sejoli itu pun melepas rindu masing-masing dengan berjalan-jalan di sekitar air terjun di Dago.Dalam kesempatan itulah, Yusuf menyatakan cintanya kepada Maria.

Sementara hari-hari Maria penuh dengan kehangatan bersama Yusuf, Tuti sendiri lebih banyak menghabiskan waktunya dengan membaca buku.Sesungguhpun demikian pikiran Tuti tidak urung diganggu oleh keinginannya untuk merasakan kemesraan cinta. Ingat pula ia pada teman sejawatnya, Supomo. Lelaki itu pernah mengirimkan surat cintanya kepada Tuti.

Ketika Maria mendadak terkena demam malaria, Tuti menjaganya dengan sabar.Saat itulah tiba adik Supomo yang ternyata disuruh Supomo untuk meminta jawaban Tuti perihal keinginandsnya untuk menjalin cinta dengannya.Sesungguhpun gadis itu sebenarnya sedang merindukan cinta kasih seorang, Supomo dipandangnya sebagai bukan lelaki idamannya. Maka segera ia menulis surat penolakannya.

Sementara itu, keadaan Maria makin bertambah parah.Kemudian diputuskan untuk merawatnya di rumah sakit.Ternyata menurut keterangan dokter, Maria mengidap penyakit TBC. Dokter yang merawatnya menyarankan agar Maria dibawa ke rumah sakit TBC di Pacet, Sindanglaya Jawa Barat.
Perawatan terhadap Maria sudah berjalan sebulan lebih lamanya. Namun keadaannya tidak juga mengalami perubahan.Lebih daripada itu, Maria mulai merasakan kondisi kesehatan yang makin lemah. Tampaknya ia sudah pasrah menerima kenyataan.

Pada suatu kesempatan, disaat Tuti dan Yusuf berlibur di rumah Ratna dan Saleh di Sindanglaya, disitulah mata Tuti mulai terbuka dalam memandang kehidupan di pedesaan. Kehidupan suami istri yang melewati hari-harinya dengan bercocok tanam itu, ternyata juga mampu membimbing masyarakat sekitarnya menjadi sadar akan pentingnya pendidikan. Keadaan tersebut benar-benar telah menggugah alam pikiran Tuti. Ia menyadari bahwa kehidupan mulia, mengabdi kepada masyarakat tidak hanya dapat dilakukan di kota atau dalam kegiatan-kegiatan organisasi, sebagaimana yang selama ini ia lakukan, tetapi juga di desa atau di masyarakat mana pun, pengabdian itu dapat dilakukan.

Sejalan dengan keadaan hubungan Yusuf dan Tuti yang belakangan ini tampak makin akrab, kondisi kesehatan Maria sendiri justru kian mengkhawatirkan.Dokter yang merawatnya pun rupanya sudah tak dapat berbuat lebih banyak lagi.Kemudian setelah Maria sempat berpesan kepada Tuti dan Yusuf agar keduanya tetap bersatu dan menjalin hubungan rumah tangga, Maria menghembuskan napasnya yang terakhir. “Alangkah bahagianya saya di akhirat nanti, kalau saya tahu, bahwa kakandaku berdua hidup rukun dan berkasih-kasihan seperti kelihatan kepada saya dalam beberapa hari ini. Inilah permintaan saya yang penghabisan dan saya, saya tidak rela selama-lamanya kalau kakandaku masing-masing mencari peruntungan pada orang lain”. Demikianlah pesan terakhir almarhum Maria. Lalu sesuai dengan pesan tersebut Yusuf dan Tuti akhirnya tidak dapat berbuat lain, kecuali melangsungkan perkawinan karena cinta keduanya memang sudah tumbuh bersemi.
